Investigating distributed practice as a strategy for school students learning mathematics
(2018-09)
Spacing or distributed practice is a prominent learning strategy that is related to the so-called desirable difficulties. With distributed practice, a given learning duration is interrupted by at least one break of variable length. In contrast, with massed practice the same total time is spent learning, but without interruption. There is a rich body of empirical evidence proving the positive effect of distributed practice on the retention of verbal material. Beyond rote memory, however, the empirical grounds regarding ...

Mental rotation and the human body: Children's inflexible use of embodiment mirrors that of adults
(2018)
Adults’ mental rotation performance with body‐like stimuli is enhanced if these stimuli are anatomically compatible with a human body, but decreased by anatomically incompatible stimuli. In this study, we investigated these effects for kindergartners and first‐graders: When asked to mentally rotate cube configurations attached with human body parts in an anatomically compatible way, allowing for the projection of a human body, children performed better than with pure cube combinations. By contrast, when body parts ...

Negative effects for coaching clients and coaches and implications for their prevention
(2018-02-28)
This dissertation is a thesis by publication, which is based on four studies. The results have been published in international peer-reviewed journals or are submitted for publication. This work introduces the overarching background and goals of this dissertation, its core findings, and how they contribute to the dissertation goals. The full-length manuscripts are presented in the end.
Background: Coaching researchers and practitioners alike call for the need of evidence-based coaching. However, evidence-based coaching ...

Leading and Following Day by Day
(2018)
This dissertation deals with daily leader-follower interactions, alignment of words and actions, well-being and effectiveness. The first part of the dissertation shows the impact of leader behavior on follower well-being in the context of transformational leadership. The second part goes beyond single leader behaviors and investigates the value-based alignment of two behaviors, namely vision communication and goal setting, and their effects on trust and leaders‘ effectiveness. Turning the lens, the final part sheds ...

Teaching quality in higher education: Do student evaluation of teaching questionnaires allow a reliable and valid assessment of teaching quality?
(2018-06-18)
Improving teaching quality is a relevant topic in society to nurture the students’ innate potential in the best possible way. One often applied tool for assessing teaching quality in higher education is student evaluations of teaching (SETs) that are used as a criterion for making important decisions in higher education such as employing teachers, distributing funds, and making changes in the curriculum. Despite their effect on decisions it is relatively unclear if SETs are a valid and reliable assessment of teaching ...

Distributing mathematical practice of third and seventh graders: Applicability of the spacing effect in the classroom
(2018-10-23)
We examined the effect of distributed practice on the mathematical performance of third and seventh graders (N = 213) in school. Students first received an introduction to a mathematical topic, derived from their curriculum. Thereafter, they practiced in one of two conditions. In the massed condition, they worked on three practice sets in 1 day. In the distributed condition, they worked on one practice set per day for 3 consecutive days. Bayesian analyses of the performance in two follow‐up tests 1 and 6 weeks after ...

Knowledge Is Power for Medical Assistants: Crystallized and Fluid Intelligence As Predictors of Vocational Knowledge
(2018-02-01)
Medical education research has focused almost entirely on the education of future physicians. In comparison, findings on other health-related occupations, such as medical assistants, are scarce. With the current study, we wanted to examine the knowledge-is-power hypothesis in a real life educational setting and add to the sparse literature on medical assistants. Acquisition of vocational knowledge in vocational education and training (VET) was examined for medical assistant students (n = 448). Differences in ...

Shape But Not Color Facilitates Two-Year-Olds’ Search Performance in a Spatial Rotation Task
(2018)
Children younger than 3 years of age often fail to track hidden objects that are rotated together with identical hiding containers, which might be due to relatively complex paradigms. We examined whether 2-year-olds (N = 28) are already able to track spatial rotations (i.e., by 90° and 180°) if the task is facilitated by increasing the visual discriminability of the hiding containers by means of different shapes and different colors. Children performed above chance level in all conditions except for the condition in ...

Motivation für Gruppenarbeit
(2018)
