The impact of corruption on food security from a macro perspective
(2021-02-18)
Despite the recent developments food security is one of the common problems of humanity. In order to eliminate this problem, various initiatives are taken in the fields of political and international relations backed by many academic studies that are conducted to scrutinize the dynamics of the problem and inspire the policies to be implemented. This study aims at providing macro solutions to the problem through the study of the relationship between food security and corruption in view of variables such as unemployment, ...

Consumer acceptability of rice-like grains made from cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and corn (Zea mays)
(2020-11-29)
Rice is one of the most important crops in Asia. There are several crops that can be utilized as an alternative to rice. This can help reduce the burden of rice importation and improve food security. The purpose of this study was to develop a consumer acceptable rice-like grains from cassava and corn. A total of 220 combinations of rice-like grains from different cultivars of cassava (Binulak, Lakan 1, Lakan 2, Rajah 4) and corn (IPB Var 6, IPB Var 8, IPB Var 11, IPB Var 13) were developed. Most acceptable combinations ...

Responsibility and prosocial behavior - Experimental evidence on charitable donations by individuals and group representatives
(2020-11-13)
In this paper we present a lab-in-the-field experiment with a large and diverse sample to compare charitable donations when individuals decide for themselves only and when they decide as a group representative. In contrast to the previous literature, we find that individuals make greater charitable contributions when they decide as a group representative than when they decide alone. This result demonstrates that being responsible for a group does not always lead to more selfish behavior.

Litter characteristics of pine shavings, bio-secure pine shavings and sunflower hulls and its impact on broiler performance
(2021-02-22)
The aim of this study was to investigate the physical characteristics of three litter materials, namely pine shavings (PS), bio-secure, fumigated pine shavings (BS) and sunflower hulls (SH) and its influence on broiler performance over a 33-day production cycle. The experiment was conducted in commercial poultry houses holding 42,500 chicks each, utilising a randomised block design with six house replicates per treatment. Litter samples were collected weekly for analyses of moisture, water-holding capacity, bulk ...

A review of soil fertility management communication in sub-Saharan Afrika
(2021-02-12)
In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), declining soil fertility is among the factors a ecting optimal food production. Although a number of interventions have been implemented to improve soil fertility management (SFM) in SSA, their adoption especially among small scale farmers has been low. Although the literature provides considerable evidence of socioeconomic factors which influence adoption, the subject of how communication influences adoption of SFM remains under-explored. This paper therefore reviewed studies on SFM ...

Inclusive conservation and the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework: Tensions and prospects
(2022-03-18)
The draft Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework commits to achievement of equity and justice outcomes and represents a “relational turn” in how we understand inclusive conservation. Although “inclusivity” is drawn on as a means to engage diverse stakeholders, widening the framing of inclusivity can create new tensions with regard to how to manage protected areas. We first offer a set of tensions that emerge in the light of the relational turn in biodiversity conservation. Drawing on global case examples applying ...

Associations between landscape values, self-reported knowledge, and land-use: a public participation GIS assessment
(2022-04-03)
While previous socio-ecological systems research has shown relationships between local knowledge and the assignment of landscape values, the relationships between value assignment and more nuanced forms of local knowledge remain less understood. This study makes use of public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS), a method for identifying and mapping landscape attributes important to local communities. We use this method to assess the spatial associations between three landscape attributes often ...

The relationship between values and knowledge in visioning for landscape management: relevance for a collaborative approach
(2022-08-18)
Respecting connections between the diversity of values and forms of knowledge is essential to support a decision-making that fosters relationships between ecosystems and people. However, little theory has been developed for clarifying interactions between values and knowledge, and their relevance for environmental policy. We surfaced the overlooked relationship between values and knowledge by studying individual cognitive and emotional processes during a guided visioning exercise in the context of the multifunctional ...

Quantification of the In Vitro Predisposition to Glistening Formation in One Manufacturer’s Acrylic Intraocular Lenses Made in Different Decades
(2021-02-05)
Introduction
Foldable hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) are prone to develop a long-term postoperative material change called glistenings. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the predisposition for glistening formation in one type of hydrophobic acrylic IOL material from its introduction to the present day.
Methods
In a laboratory setup, an in vitro model was used to induce glistenings in hydrophobic acrylic IOLs manufactured by one company (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX, USA) in different ...
