Algorithmic Reduction of Biochemical Reaction Networks
(2022-02-25)
The dynamics of species concentrations of chemical reaction networks are given by autonomous first-order ordinary differential equations. Singular perturbation methods allow the computation of approximate reduced systems that make explicit several time scales with corresponding invariant manifolds. This thesis presents:
1. An algorithmic approach for the computation of such reductions on solid analytical grounds. Required scalings are derived using tropical geometry. The existence of invariant manifolds is subject ...

The Importance of tRNA Modification and SSD1 Status for Protein Homeostasis and Cell Viability
(2022-03)
Chemical modifications of anticodon loop are required to support tRNA function in mRNA decoding and to prevent protein aggregation in the eukaryotic model system Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This work investigates the effects of mutation in the gene encoding the Deg1 pseudouridine synthase. It is known that the mutation of the human DEG1 orthologue PUS3 causes severe neurological and developmental defects, emphasizing the general importance of the modification. However, the exact cellular consequences of deg1/pus3mutation ...

Regulatorische und systembedingte Barrieren im Bereich Nachhaltige Geldanlagen in der Anlageberatung im Retail Banking
(2022-07-29)

Striking for the Common Good
(2022-08)
The re-emergence of massive strikes in the public education sector, predominantly in the more conservative, union-weak American South, has brought seismic change to the industry and its workers. Solving the puzzle as to why these strikes were so successful against massive obstacles could beget better methods for organizing strikes in a period when neo-liberal reforms threaten public services around the world. Furthermore, an understanding of why these strikes were successful can contribute to the contemporary discourse ...

Effiziente Erdgasbereitstellung mit erneuerbaren Energien
(2022-07)

Analysis of near-substrate magnetic particle transport for Lab-on-a-chip applications: stray field modulations, influence of particle properties and three-dimensional trajectories
(2022)

Consistency and Computation
(2022)
The diagonal arguments by Cantor, Gödel and Turing constitute fundamental results that demonstrate limits to what is mathematically possible. These results can easily appear to us as limits that must hold, as if they were laws of nature that govern the ideal world of platonic numbers and logic, giving them an “ultraphysical” appearance of rigidity and hardness.
In all three cases, Wittgenstein critically examines the formal ideal of consistency and points out that the conclusions of the diagonal arguments only seem ...

Farmers’ attitudes and perceptions of adoption of agricultural innovations in Kenya: a mixed methods analysis
(2022-08-20)
Attitudes and perceptions are key constructs in decision making. Their nature and influence on agricultural technology adoption among smallholder farmers in Kenya has not been adequately researched. The research applied a mixed methods approach to assess the influence of attitudes and perceptions in adoption of agricultural innovations by smallholder farmers in Kenya. The quantitative phase used a survey (n=245) while the qualitative consisted of focus groups (n=28) to elicit subjective farmer views of innovations. ...

Protein and iron source snack bar made from Mlanding Tempeh – A fermented Lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala)
(2022-08-31)
Mlanding tempeh is an Indonesian fermented food made from Lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala), a tropical legume that contains complete nutrients and has high productivity and ability to adapt to dry climates. This traditional treatment seems improve its nutritional value, particularly the protein profile. However the short shelf life and low acceptance hinder this food to support community nutrition. This study introduced an effort to process this indigenous fermented legume into a snack bar which has better acceptance ...
