Mediating between concepts and language - Processing structures
(Mouton de Gruyter, 2003)
One of the main functions of language is to abstract over complex non-verbal message structures. The language system generates highly compact linguistic material which, however, must still enable the recipient of the corresponding linear grammatical sequence to fully infer the intended message. To guarantee this a device is required which links concepts and grammar in a systematic fashion by negotiating the requirements of both the generalized linguistic structures and the underlying conceptual complexes. Typically, ...

How real are adjective order constraints? Multiple prenominal adjectives at the grammatical interfaces
(2019)
Adjective order restrictions on attributive adjectives (AORs) have been subject to debate in modern linguistic research for a long time. Most generally, the question whether AORs can be located in grammar as such in rule-based fashion is still unsettled. In the current paper, we largely argue against this view and claim that several of the core data to be explained are preferences based on norms rather than rules. A pragmatic explanation is offered to account for marked or apparently ungrammatical examples. First, ...

Argument-structural restrictions on word-formation patterns
(De Gruyter Mouton, 2015)
The implementation of argument-structural effects on word-formation is a vital aspect in modeling the lexical system and the interface between morphology and syntax. The current article provides an overview of theoretical perspectives in the field and presents analyses of structural principles holding in the domain. A number of test cases relating to fundamental operations, e.g., in compounding and nominalization are discussed, as well as specific conditions restricting the formation of morphologically complex words.

Name-informing and distancing sogenannt ‘so-called’: Name mentioning and the lexicon-pragmatics interface
(2018)
This paper aims at a unified analysis of the different interpretations which constructions involving the German name-mentioning modifier soge-nannt‘so-called’ can adopt. In contrast to nouns like Sepsis‘sepsis’, a noun like Hotel ‘hotel’, as insogenanntes Hotel, gives rise to a “distanced” interpretation of the construction rather than one informing about a concept’s name. After a thorough investigation of the lexical-semantic properties, we propose the reading of the construction to emerge from an interplay between ...

Linguistische Relativität und die “Sprache-und-Denken”-Debatte : Implikationen, Probleme und mögliche Lösungen aus Sicht der kognitionswissenschaftlichen Linguistik
(2009)

*nackt werden: The combinatorial restrictions of the German copula werden and the notion of control
(2005)
I pursue the concept of a generative lexical device, which organizes the mapping between conceptual and linguistic representations. The design of the interface function between grammar and concepts upholds a modular conception of linguistic structure building even in environments where information from various computational levels have to be calculated. Against this background, I argue that the German copula werden ('become') imposes two core conditions on its adjectival complement: i.) The state that holds after the ...

Compounds vs. phrases: The cognitive status of morphological products
(John Benjamins, 2014)
Nominal compounds and corresponding phrases provide a suitable test bed for inquiry into the interface and demarcations between syntax and morphology. In this article we show that the distinction between the two constructions is blurred from a theoretical perspective and investigate processing and cognitive aspects. After an examination of structural as well as semantic properties of the two types, we report on three studies (memorization, questionnaire, and reading time) that experimentally juxtapose German ...

Conceptual and grammatical characteristics of argument alternations: the case of decausative verbs
(2003)
In this paper the grammatical and conceptual properties of decausative verbs of the type The plate broke are explored from the viewpoint of a model of language production that systematically upholds the distinction between grammatical and extralinguistic information. In the constructions under consideration, an agentive entity — just like in passives — is suppressed by grammatical means. The first part of the paper centers around the question of whether an implicit entity can be derived from linguistic form, that is, ...

Alexiadou, Artemis & Liliane Haegemann & Melita Stavrou. 2006. Noun Phrase in the Generative Perspective (Studies in Generative Grammar 71). Berlin: Mouton de Gruyter. xxii, 664 S.
(2009)

Nominal composition and the demarcation between morphology and syntax: Grammatical, variational, and cognitive factors
(WVT Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Trier, 2012)
In this paper, the authors investigate nominal compounds in English and German against the background of the debate about the boundary between morphological and syntactic structure building in language. After an examination of grammatical, variational as well as functional differences between compounds and phrases, they focus on processing factors to disentangle cognitive differences between the two domains. Crucially, the authors report on three experimental studies, which are designed to reveal contrasts in the ...
