Consumer acceptability of rice-like grains made from cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and corn (Zea mays)
(2020-11-29)
Rice is one of the most important crops in Asia. There are several crops that can be utilized as an alternative to rice. This can help reduce the burden of rice importation and improve food security. The purpose of this study was to develop a consumer acceptable rice-like grains from cassava and corn. A total of 220 combinations of rice-like grains from different cultivars of cassava (Binulak, Lakan 1, Lakan 2, Rajah 4) and corn (IPB Var 6, IPB Var 8, IPB Var 11, IPB Var 13) were developed. Most acceptable combinations ...

An Exploration on Factors Influencing Certified and Farm-Saved Seed Use: A Case Study in Turkish Wheat Farming
(2020-11-29)
Seeds are an important input for wheat-growing, as is the case for all crop production. The type and quality of seed in crop production are the first condition for productivity and accordingly certified wheat seed use is being encouraged by the government since 2005 in Turkey. This study examined the factors affecting the certified seed and farmer (farm)-saved seed use in wheat farming in Turkey. The result of the analyses showed that there is a significant difference between farmers using certified seed and farm-saved ...

Manure application effects on nitrogen pools in a subtropical soil of Oman
(2019-04)
Agricultural productivity of the millennia-old oasis agriculture in Oman is based on the continuous application of high rates of goat and sheep manure combined with flood irrigation. The high nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) turnover in these systems is a result of year-around high temperatures and continuous soil moisture, but knowledge is lacking on how N and C are transformed under these conditions. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the N movement in different soil N pools. To this end a field experiment was ...

Investigation of potential drying strategies for quality maintenance of carrot
(2021-05-27)
Convective drying of carrots is a non-linear and unsteady-state process with simultaneous mechanism of heat and mass transfer leading to time varying quality changes along the process and finally causing irreversible quality modification. Inappropriate drying condition will generate many qualities related problems such as destruction of physical properties and discoloration of carrots causing by mechanical and thermal damage due to over-drying or extended drying periods. Inconsistent quality of the product was also ...

Assessment and use of sea buckthorn and apple diversity in northern Pakistan
(2020-12-03)
Many local perennial plant genetic resources (P/PGR) are under threat due to over-exploitation, depletion, degradation, farmers’ favoring few cash crops, poor marketing conditions leading to low product prices along with the lack of knowledge about alternative uses and management strategies. Such processes often cause the underutilization and replacement of local P/PGR causing them to become neglected and underutilized species (NUS). The decline of species abundance may cause genetic erosion of these NUS crops and ...
