Nutrient and virtual water fluxes of vegetable production and food distribution in two West African cities
(2017-10-04)
Water and food security will be challenged by uncertainties related to changing climatic and socio-economic conditions triggered by urbanization. The present studies aimed at (a) investigating the effects of mineral fertilization and biochar amendment at two water quality and quantity levels on biomass production, plant nutrition, and soil moisture in vegetables with a focus on Tamale, (b) assessing nutrient losses via leaching and gaseous emissions and calculated nutrient balance and use efficiencies in Tamale and ...

Gaseous and leaching losses of carbon and nitrogen in irrigated organic farming of a coastal oasis in Oman
(2011-03-14)

Microbial response to restoration of tantalite mine soils in western Rwanda
(2016-05-04)
Artisanal columbite-tantalite (coltan) mining has had negative effects on the rural economy in the great Lakes region of Africa through labor deficits, degradation and loss of farmland, food insecurity, high cost of living, and reduced traditional export crop production alongside secondary impacts that remotely affect the quality of air, water, soil, plants, animals, and human wellbeing. The situation is multifaceted and calls for a holistic approach for short and long-term mitigation of such negative effects. This ...

Diversity and nutritional properties of Pakistani dates: implications for sustainable value chain and decent living perspectives of rural households
(2016-02-09)
Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) occupies almost three percent of the total worldwide cultivated area, with an annual production of seven million tonnes (t). Pakistan is an ideal place for the cultivation of date palm due to its sandy loam soil and semi-arid climate. In 2012, Pakistan produced 600,000 t of dates, on an area of 95,000 ha. Baluchistan province is the country’s top date producer, followed by Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) provinces. More than 300 date varieties are known to exist in Pakistan ...

Shifting cultivation and forest resources in Nagaland, N.-E. India
(2010-06-17)

Sustainability of traditional cocoa agroforests in Ghana
(2022)
Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is an important agricultural commodity that is important to the economies of many countries in the world. Due to cocoa’s dependence on fertile forests soils, its production is a major cause of deforestation and soil degradation in producing countries. When grown in agroforestry systems it can conserve biodiversity, sequester carbon (C), and maintain soil fertility. There are many cocoa agroforests which are managed without synthetic agrochemicals. Because organic cocoa certification is now ...

Matter flows and balances in urban vegetable gardens of Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso (West Africa)
(kassel university press, 2012-07-30)
Many efforts are undertaken for sustaining urban agriculture in African cities. This study therefore investigated nutrient management practices in urban vegetable gardens of Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso (West Africa). Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and carbon (C) fluxes were quantified and nutrient balances calculated for three gardens representing the typical commercial gardening + field crops and livestock system (cGCL) and three gardens representing the commercial gardening + semi-commercial field ...

Plant growth, water quality, carbon and nutrient flows in rural-urban cropping systems of Bengaluru, India
(2024)
The global urban population is expected to reach 5.2 billion by 2030 and by mid-2023 approximately 4.6 billion out of more than 8 billion population were living in towns or cities. This represents approximately 57% of the total global population and is set to reach 60% by 2030.
