Influence of ethylene oxide and gamma irradiation sterilization processes on the degradation behaviour of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in the course of artificially accelerated aging
(2024-02-10)
To promote the application of bio-based materials in the field of medical technology, it is essential to conduct additional research, focusing on their long-term performance after sterilization. For this purpose, the study examines the aging behaviour of three poly(lactic-acid) (PLA) materials, sterilized with either ethylene oxide or gamma irradiation, over a two years aging period, in accordance with ASTM F1980-21. During these investigations, a direct correlation between moisture absorption and degradation progression ...

Putting Walkscapes on the Map: GIS-based Visualization for Mobile Methods in Landscape Research
(2024)
The idea of exploring landscapes by walking is historically and socially deeply rooted and fundamental to our modern understanding of landscapes but is often methodologically underrepresented. This paper illustrates that walking can be considered and applied as a method in landscape research. After a brief explanation of walking as a source of knowledge, a selection of mobile methods from literature is explained and their potential in landscape research is outlined. Based on these expla-nations, a new and innovative ...

Robotically winded full scale timber prototypes
(2024-05-10)
Additive manufacturing is a promising and resource-efficient construction method, applying material only where needed. Demand for these processes in construction is growing, but research into their use in timber construction is limited. The 3DWoodWind project explores additive application methods using thin wood veneer strips. Robotic winding processes can be used to develop wood-based hollow parts with minimal material input and optimised structural properties. This paper presents a modular building system of ...

The political: A view from Jakarta's kampungs
(2024-04-26)
This article is a response to Leitner and Sheppard’s recent publications on Jakarta. I argue that Jakarta’s kampungs and the eviction of their communities is a topic that needs to be situated in the realm of social reproduction. The multidimensional problems in kampungs fall within capitalism’s wider ‘crisis of care’. From this methodological position, we can access the political domain of the kampung, from which a new political agency emerges as collective bodies beyond merely the sum of individual survival tactics.

Analysis of the Similarity between Injection Molding Simulation and Experiment
(2024-05-01)
In the plastics industry, CFD simulation has been used for many years to support mold design. However, using simulation as a substitute for experimentation remains a major challenge to this day. This is due to the unknown congruence between simulation and experiment. The present work focuses on a comparison between simulation (generated with the software Moldflow Insight Ultimate from Autodesk Inc., San Francisco, CA, USA) and experiment by using molds of different complexity, where, in contrast to a large number of ...

Peak shaving at system level with a large district heating substation using deep learning forecasting models
(2024-05-20)
The decarbonisation of urban district heating (DH) systems requires increased heating grid flexibility. Therefore, this article examines the optimised operation of a tank thermal energy storage (TTES) on the secondary side of a new DH substation for an industrial site in a German city, in order to shave the peaks of the whole DH system and thus reduce the need for heat-only boilers (HOB). The accuracy of heat load and return temperature forecasts for both the industrial consumer and the DH grid is critical to the ...

Efficient numerical calculation of LYAPUNOV-exponents and stability assessment for quasi-periodic motions in nonlinear systems
(2024-04-05)
Investigating the stability of stationary motions is a highly relevant aspect when characterizing dynamical systems. For equilibria and periodic motions, well established theories and approaches exist to assess their stability: in both cases stability may be assessed using eigenvalue analyses of small perturbations. When it comes to quasi-periodic motions, such eigenvalue analyses are not applicable, since these motions can not be parameterized on finite time intervals. However, quasi-periodic motions can be densely ...

The relevance of proximity and work-related experience for the individual support for the expansion of power plants: An empirical analysis of wind, coal, and nuclear energy
(2024-06-14)
This paper empirically examines whether proximity to power plants and work-related experience in the wind, coal, and nuclear energy sectors are correlated with the individual support for the expansion of corresponding regional power plants. The data for this analysis stem from a large-scale computer-based survey among more than 3700 citizens in Germany. The econometric analysis with binary and ordered probit models reveals significantly positive correlations between work-related experience in a specific energy sector ...

The role of prior knowledge and need for cognition for the effectiveness of interleaved and blocked practice
(2023-07-11)
Interleaved practice combined with comparison prompts can better foster students’ adaptive use of subtraction strategies compared to blocked practice. It has not been previously investigated whether all students benefit equally from these teaching approaches. While interleaving subtraction tasks prompts students’ attention to the different task characteristics triggering the use of specific subtraction strategies, blocked practice does not support students in detecting these differences. Thus, low-prior-knowledge ...

The efficacy of spatio-temporal predictors in forecasting the risk of Cydia nigricana infestation
(2024-03-15)
The ability to estimate the risk of pest infestation can help farmers to reduce pesticide application and provide guidance that would result in better management decisions. This study tested whether different combinations of spatial and temporal risk factors may be used to predict the damage potential of pea moth, Cydia nigricana Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a major pest in field pea (Pisum sativum L., Fabaceae). Over four consecutive years, the abundance of pea moth was monitored by placing pheromone traps ...
