Lesson learnt from Smart Rice Actions in Indonesia
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2018-12-26)
Smart Rice (SR) actions are innovative farming practices derived from climate smart agriculture (CSA) concepts and are directed to comply with mitigation and adaptation strategies to climate change. This study provided information about the plausible implementation of SR actions in Indonesia based on literature reviews and stakeholders’ consultation with key informants work- ing on crop management and climate information. The SR actions recommendations are a set of farming practices applied to fulfill the needs of ...

Carbon footprint for wheat and corn under Egyptian condition
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2018-12-26)
Egypt agriculture is facing a great joint challenge of ensuring food security and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions under climate change. Characterizing the carbon footprints of crop production by life cycle analysis is be critical for identifying the key measures to mitigate greenhouse gas emission while sustaining crop productivity in the near future. Agriculture contributes a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions and concurrently represents a carbon dioxide (CO2) sink; it thus has two fold opposing impacts ...

Environmental Impacts of Food Loss and Waste: Land Degradation
(2021-02-23)
Food waste and loss have a negative impact on the environment through water, land, energy and other natural resources that are used to produce non-consumable products. According to the results of an empirical study, to establish the degree of degradation of land resources as a result of food loss and waste, as well as to identify potential environmental benefits from reducing food loss and waste for agricultural land use. Methods: The authors’ methodological approach for assessing the impact of food loss and waste ...

Household food wastage in Albania: causes, extent and implications
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2020-04-02)
Food waste (FW) is a very serious issue not only in ethical and social terms, but also given its economic and environmental impacts (cf. resource wastage and depletion). Recent data show that more than half of food wastage in the European Union is generated in households. FW is unfortunately not well addressed in Albania. For this reason, an exploratory online survey was carried out in the period August–November 2016 with 185 Albanians to analyse the causes, extent and implications of household food wastage in Albania. ...

Biological control in pest management in Turkey: Comparison of the attributes of participant and non-participant greenhouse farmers in government-subsidized biological control practices
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2019-11-29)
The adoption of biological control methods is increasing in crop production due to concerns and awareness of consumers about food safety and pesticide residue conundrum. Biological control methods are a key component in pest management practices as they minimize the usage of pesticides, hence create less environmental and health problems. Biological control practices have been supported in Turkey since the year 2010 to ensure economical greenhouse production and to reduce the consumption of pesticides for sustainable ...

Optimization of cassava dried noodle using hydrocolloid and protein isolates: a tropical noodle
(2020-11-29)
Cassava flour has the potential to be used as a substituent of flour in making dry noodles. This study aims to obtain the optimum formulation of flour, hydrocolloid content and protein isolate content. Formula optimization of cassava noodle has been done by using two types of cassava flour: native and pre-gelatinization, adding additional food additives such as hydrocolloid (xanthan gum and konjac glucomannan) and pea protein isolate. The design of the formulation and optimization is done by D-optimal combined design ...

(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2018-12-26)
Sustainable rural development involves the attainment of a balanced development of the economic, ecological and social spheres within a community. For this purpose, the state agrarian policy should be aimed at achieving three goals: 1) food security of the state; 2) solving of social and environmental problems in rural areas; and, 3) the transformation of the agrarian sector into a highly effective, competitive domestic and foreign market economy sector of the state. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to study ...
