General Belief in a Just World Is Positively Associated with Dishonest Behavior
(2017-10-10)
According to the just-world theory, people need to – or rather want to – believe that they live in a just world where they will receive what they earn and consequently earn what they receive. In the present work, we examined the influence of people’s general and personal beliefs in a just world (BJW) on their (dis)honest behavior. Given that general BJW was found to be linked to antisocial tendencies, we expected stronger general BJW to be linked to more dishonesty. Given that personal BJW was found to be correlated ...

Role of Pseudouridine Formation by Deg1 for Functionality of Two Glutamine Isoacceptor tRNAs
(2017-01-26)
Loss of Deg1/Pus3 and concomitant elimination of pseudouridine in tRNA at positions 38 and 39 (ψ38/39) was shown to specifically impair the function of tRNAGlnUUG under conditions of temperature-induced down-regulation of wobble uridine thiolation in budding yeast and is linked to intellectual disability in humans. To further characterize the differential importance of the frequent ψ38/39 modification for tRNAs in yeast, we analyzed the in vivo function of non-sense suppressor tRNAs SUP4 and sup70-65 in the absence ...

Weak and strong bi-material interfaces and their influence on propagating cracks in plane elastic structures
(2017-09-06)
The developing crack paths in heterogeneous structures are the result of the inhomogeneous state of stress. The latter stems from e.g. voids or inclusions in an elastic matrix, which are bonded either by strong or weak interfaces. Besides the stiffness of an inclusion, the kind of interface has a decisive influence on the state of stress and therefore on propagating cracks. It is experimentally proven that cracks tend to grow towards regions with lower stiffness (Tilbrook et al., 2006; Judt et al., 2015), therefore ...

Boxwood Borer Heterobostrychus brunneus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) Infesting Dried Cassava: A Current Record from Southern Ethiopia
(2017-01-27)
Insect specimens of adult beetles and larvae of 7–9 and 9–10 mm length, respectively were collected from infested dry cassava at two locations from multiple stores in southern Ethiopia. The specimens were identified as Heterobostrychus brunneus (Murray, 1867) commonly known as boxwood borer and auger beetle. The study presents a current record of H. brunneus in Ethiopia, particularly in the context of infesting food products. Additionally, a wide geographical distribution of the pest was reviewed and presented in ...

Tipping Versus Cooperating to Supply a Public Good
(2017-02-17)
In some important multiplayer situations, such as efforts to supply a global public good, players can choose the game they want to play. In this paper we conduct an experimental test of the decision by a group with fixed membership, playing over a finite number of periods, to choose between a “tipping” game, in which every player wants to contribute to the public good provided enough other players contribute, and a prisoners’ dilemma, the classic cooperation game. In the prisoners’ dilemma, the first best outcome is ...

„Wutblech, gestrichen mit Krankheitsgedankenlack“
(2017-08)

Process and utility systems integration and optimisation for ultra-low energy milk powder production
(2017-04-26)
This study applies a Total Site Heat Integration approach in conjunction with a detailed process and utility model, to develop an innovative ultra-low energy milk powder plant design. The basis for the analysis is a state-of-the-art modern milk powder plant that requires 5265 MJ/tp of fuel and 210.5 kWh/tp (58.5 MJe/tp) of electricity. The model of the modern milk powder plant was validated against industrial data and changes to process and/or utility systems are targeted and implemented into the model to understand ...

Output 5 ― Evaluation-Tool
(2017)
Purpose – The purpose of this report is to study the success of short-term intensive study programmes (ISPs) over the short-term perspective and highlight additional lessons for students which might be missed without the experience of working face-to-face on sophisticated tasks in multicultural teams.
Approach/ Methodology – The evaluation of our ISPs was conducted using a quantitative methodology, via questionnaires given to students at the beginning, the middle and at the end of a course. The questionnaire development ...

Assessment of probabilistic distributed factors influencing renewable energy supply for hotels using Monte-Carlo methods
(2017-04-05)
This paper investigates the use of renewable energies to supply hotels in island regions. The aim is to evaluate the effect of weather and occupancy fluctuations on the sensitivity of investment criteria. The sensitivity of the chosen energy system is examined using a Monte Carlo simulation considering stochastic weather data, occupancy rates and energy needs. For this purpose, algorithms based on measured data are developed and applied to a case study on the Canary Islands.
The results underline that electricity ...

The development of emotional and behavioral self-regulation and their effects on academic achievement in childhood
(2017-01-10)
Self-regulation is an essential ability of children to cope with various developmental challenges. This study examines the developmental interplay between emotional and behavioral self-regulation during childhood and the relationship with academic achievement using data from the longitudinal Millennium Cohort Study (UK). Using cross-lagged panel analyses, we found that emotional and behavioral self-regulation were separate and stable constructs. In addition, both emotional and behavioral self-regulation had positive ...
