H_2 solved by the finite element method
(1987)
We report on the solution of the Hartree-Fock equations for the ground state of the H_2 molecule using the finite element method. Both the Hartree-Fock and the Poisson equations are solved with this method to an accuracy of 10^-8 using only 26 x 11 grid points in two dimensions. A 41 x 16 grid gives a new Hartree-Fock benchmark to ten-figure accuracy.

Interactions of organic amendments, pea (Pisum sativum L.) growth, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and other soil microorganisms
(2017-07-25)
Microbial decomposition of organic substances in soil is a central process for maintaining nutrient cycling, and it can be affected by the presence of plants, especially by mycorrhizal plants, in different ways. Organic fertilizers maintain soil fertility and increase crop productivity. Less attention has been paid to C-rich organic fertilizers. On the other hand, legumes are the main source of N input in organic farming. However, field peas grown as a sole crop suffer many problems that make the yield low and ...

Further development of indicators for the assessment of soil biodiversity using the example of earthworms and springtails (Collembola) with particular reference to organic farming
(2018-06-28)

Hyperspectral field measurements to determine dry matter yield and nutritive value of legume-grass swards
(2009-04-29)
Summary:
Productivity, botanical composition and forage quality of legume-grass swards are important factors for successful arable farming in both organic and conventional farming systems. As these attributes can vary considerably within a field, a non-destructive method of detection while doing other tasks would facilitate a more targeted management of crops, forage and nutrients in the soil-plant-animal system.
This study was undertaken to explore the potential of field spectral measurements for a non destructive ...

A secret world - C and N rhizodeposition of pea, influenced by plant development and growing conditions
(2017-07-25)
An accurate knowledge of the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) input through crops into soil is highly important. The estimation of the additional amount of nitrogen originating from rhizodeposition helps to improve crop rotations. The preceding crop effect of cultures can be more accurately evaluated and ultimately the use of nitrogen fertilizer can be reduced and costs can be saved. Moreover, a better knowledge of the amount of carbon emitted by plants and incorporated in the soil improves the estimation of the C ...

Der Einfluss langjähriger Applikation von Biogasgüllen auf die Bodenfruchtbarkeit
(2015-08-04)

Determination of yield and quality parameters of energy crops applying laboratory and field spectroscopy
(2010-06-04)
A real-time analysis of renewable energy sources, such as arable crops, is of great importance with regard to an optimised process management, since aspects of ecology and biodiversity are considered in crop production in order to provide a sustainable energy supply by biomass.
This study was undertaken to explore the potential of spectroscopic measurement procedures for the prediction of potassium (K), chloride (Cl), and phosphate (P), of dry matter (DM) yield, metabolisable energy (ME), ash and crude fibre contents ...

Factors and mechanisms controlling soil organic carbon turnover in subsoils of agricultural sites
(2016-07-12)
Two-third of the terrestrial C is stored in soils, and more than 50% of soil organic C (SOC) is stored in subsoils from 30 – 100 cm. Hence, subsoil is important as a source or sink for CO2 in the global carbon cycle. Especially the stable organic carbon (OC) is stored in subsoil, as several studies have shown that subsoil OC is of a higher average age than topsoil OC. However, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the mechanisms of C sequestration and C turnover in subsoil.
Three main factors are discussed, ...

Digital image analysis as a tool to estimate legume contributions in legume-grass swards
(2010-01-29)
Summary: Productivity and forage quality of legume-grass swards are important factors for successful arable farming in both organic and conventional farming systems. For these objectives the botanical composition of the swards is of particular importance, especially, the content of legumes due to their ability to fix airborne nitrogen. As it can vary considerably within a field, a non-destructive detection method while doing other tasks would facilitate a more targeted sward management and could predict the nitrogen ...
