Cereal/legume rotations affect chemical properties and biological activities in two West African soils
(2001)
A more widespread use of cereal/legume rotations has been suggested as a means to sustainably meet increasing food demands in sub-Saharan West Africa. Enhanced cereal yields following legumes have been attributed to chemical and biological factors such as higher levels of mineral nitrogen (Nmin) and arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) but also to lower amounts of plant parasitic nematodes. This study was conducted under controlled conditions to examine the relative contribution of AM, plant parasitic nematodes and increased ...

Changes in amino acid enantiomers and microbial performance in soils from a subtropical mountain oasis in Oman abandoned for different periods
(2003)
An important feature of maintaining the agricultural stability in millennia-old mountain oases of northern Oman is the temporary abandonment of terraces. To analyse the effects of a fallow period on soil microbial performance, i.e. microbial activity and microbial biomass, samples of eight terrace soils abandoned for different periods were collected in situ, assigned to four fallow age classes and incubated for 30 days in the laboratory after rewetting. The younger fallow age classes of 1 and 5 years were based on ...

Cereal/legume rotation effects on rhizosphere bacterial community structure in West African soils
(2003)
The increased use of cereal/legume crop rotation has been advocated as a strategy to increase cereal yields of subsistence farmers in West Africa, and is believed to promote changes in the rhizosphere that enhance early plant growth. In this study we investigated the microbial diversity of the rhizoplane from seedlings grown in two soils previously planted to cereal or legume from experimental plots in Gaya, Niger, and Kaboli, Togo. Soils from these legume rotation and continuous cereal plots were placed into containers ...

Auger transitions in Li-like and Be-like ions
(1975)
Measurements of the Auger decay of beam-foil excited Be II and Be I levels are reported along with a proposed assignment of the experimental spectra. The Li I, Be II and Be III (1s 2s^2) ^2 S \rightarrow (1s^2 2s)^2 S Auger transitions as presented in this letter represents the first observation of such states in positive ions with Z \le 5.

Femtosecond real-time probing of reactions. 12. Vectorial dynamics of transition states
(1993)
Femtosecond time-resolved techniques with KETOF (kinetic energy time-of-flight) detection in a molecular beam are developed for studies of the vectorial dynamics of transition states. Application to the dissociation reaction of IHgI is presented. For this system, the complex [I---Hg---I](++)* is unstable and, through the symmetric and asymmetric stretch motions, yields different product fragments: [I---Hg---I](++)* -> HgI(X^2/sigma^+) + I(^2P_3/2) [or I*(^2P_l/2)] (1a); [I---Hg---I](++)* -> Hg(^1S_0) + I(^2P_3/2) + ...

Femtosecond real-time probing of reactions
(1993)
Femtosecond reaction dynamics of OClO in a supersonic molecular beam are reported. The system is excited to the A^2A_2 state with a femtosecond pulse, covering a range of excitation in the symmetric stretch between v_1 = 17 to v_1 = 11 (308-352 nm). A time-delayed femtosecond probe pulse ionizes the OClO, and OClO^+ is detected. This ion has not been observed in previous experiments because of its ultrafast fragmentation. Transients are reported for the mass of the parent OClO as well as the mass of the ClO. Apparent ...

Femtosecond time-resolved molecular multiphoton ionization and fragmentation of Na_2
(1993)
We present a comparison between experimental and theoretical results for pump/probe multiphoton ionizing transitions of the sodium dimer, initiated by femtosecond laser pulses. It is shown that the motion of vibrational wavepackets in two electronic states is probed simultaneously and their dynamics is reflected in the total Na^+_2 ion signal which is recorded as a function of the time delay between pump and probe pulse. The time dependent quantum calculations demonstrate that two ionization pathways leading to the ...

Parameter identification of crack-like notches in aluminum plates based on strain gauge data
(2020-12-31)
The identification of crack parameters and stress intensity factors in aluminum plates under tensile loading is in the focus of the presented research. In this regard, data of strain gauges, distributed along the edges of the samples, are interpreted. In the experiments, slit-shaped notches take the role of cracks located in the interior of the specimens. Their positions, inclinations and lengths as well as the magnitudes of external loadings are identified solving the inverse problems of cracked plates and associated ...

Femtosecond two-photon ionization spectroscopy of the B state of Na_3 clusters
(1993)
We report time-resolved experiments studying the dynamics of the Na_3 B-X system. Femtosecond pump-probe techniques combined with ion time-of-flight (TOF) and zero kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy allow us to observe the three-dimensional wavepacket motion in the excited Na_3 B state and in the Na_3 X state. The ground state wavepacket is induced by stimulated emission pumping during the pump pulse. The X-state dynamics is dominated by the three vibrational modes of the Na_3. Furthermore we observed ...

Molecular photochemistry with femtosecond laser pulses
(1990)
Femtosecond laser pulses generated from an amplified coiliding pulse modelocked ring dye laser have been employed in molecular beam experiments to study the dynamics and the pathways of multiphoton induced ionization, autoionization and fragmentation of Na2 . Energy distributions of photoelectrons arising from these processes and the mass and released kinetic energy of the corresponding fragment ions are measured by time-of-flight spectroscopy.
