On the localization of electrons and holes in Hg_n and rare-gas clusters
(1994)
We have used a microscopic theory to study the size dependence of the degree of localization of the valence
electrons and holes in neutral an ionized rare-gas and
Hg_n clusters. We discuss under which circumstances localization of the electrons and holes is favoured. We have calculated the ionization potential of Xe_n, Kr_n and
small Hg_n clusters. Good agreement with experiments is obtained. We have also determined the dependence of the
ionization potential on cluster structure.

Theory for the optical properties of small Hg_n clusters
(1991)
The static and dynamical polarizabilities of the Hg-dimer are calculated by using a Hubbard Hamiltonian to describe the electronic structure. The Hamiltonian is
diagonalized exactly within a subspace of second-quantized electronic states from which only multiply ionized atomic configurations have been excluded. With this approximation
we can describe the most important electronic
transitions including the effect of charge fluctuations. We analyze the polarizability as a function of the intraatomic Coulomb interaction ...

An Experimental Multimedia Process Control Room
(Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Europe Chapter, 1997-11-06)
The centralised control rooms of large industrial plants have separated people from the processes they should control. Perception is restricted mainly to the visual sense. Only telephone or radio links provide narrow-band voice communication with maintenance personnel down in the plant. Multimedia equipment can perceptionally bring back the operator into the plant while bodily keeping him the comfortable and safe control room. This involves video and audio transmission from process components as well as sights and ...

Redox reactions of group 5 elements, including element 105, in aqueous solutions
(1992)
Standard redox potentials E^0(M^z+x/M^z+) in acidic solutions for group 5 elements including element 105 (Ha) and the actinide,
Pa, have been estimated on the basis of the ionization potentials calculated via the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method.
Stability of the pentavalent state was shown to increase along the group from V to Ha, while that of the tetra- and trivalent
states decreases in this direction. Our estimates have shown no extra stability of the trivalent state of hahnium. Element
105 should form ...

Precision laser spectroscopy of the ground state hyperfine splitting of hydrogenlike ^209 Bi^82+
(1994)
The first direct observation of a hyperfine splitting in the optical regime is reported. The wavelength of the M1 transition between the F = 4 and F = 5 hyperfine levels of the ground state of hydrogenlike ^209 Bi^82+ was measured to be \lamda_0 = 243.87(4) nm by detection of laser induced fluorescence at the heavy-ion storage ring ESR at GSI. In addition, the lifetime of the laser excited F = 5 sublevel was determined to be \tau_0 = 0.351(16) ms. The method can be applied to a number of other nuclei and should allow ...
