Development of organic products in Kyrgyzstan
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2019-06-05)
Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous and landlocked Central Asian country, one of five former Soviet Republics in the region. Agriculture is the main economic sector employing around 20% of population and contributing roughly 20% to the country’s GDP. Due to its climatic conditions, the Central Asian region was considered as a space for growing cotton, wheat, fruits and vegetables and tobacco and other cultures during Soviet times. Owing to its nomadic culture, Kyrgyzstan has been active predominantly in the animal husbandry sector.

General Belief in a Just World Is Positively Associated with Dishonest Behavior
(2017-10-10)
According to the just-world theory, people need to – or rather want to – believe that they live in a just world where they will receive what they earn and consequently earn what they receive. In the present work, we examined the influence of people’s general and personal beliefs in a just world (BJW) on their (dis)honest behavior. Given that general BJW was found to be linked to antisocial tendencies, we expected stronger general BJW to be linked to more dishonesty. Given that personal BJW was found to be correlated ...

Morphology, biochemistry, and management of Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia L.) accessions in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan
(2020-07-30)
Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia L., Elagnaceae) is a native multi-purpose medicinal shrub or tree of Asian regions and an integral component of high altitude terraced agroforestry systems of Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan. The strong increase in deforestation, urbanisation, and the loss of ethnically-based medication practices in local communities are gradually leading to depletion of its stands and knowledge of its use. In view of these circumstances, this study was undertaken to characterise Russian olive ...

Demonstration of improved feed trough for efficient feed utilisation by small ruminants in Southern Mali
(2021-12-21)
The ruminant feeding systems of smallholder farmers in mixed crop and livestock systems in Sudano-Sahelian zone of West Africa are characterised by waste. To promote efficient feed use, the use of improved feed trough for small ruminants was demonstrated in Sirakele, Zanzoni and M’Pessoba in Koutiala district in southern Mali in the late (March/April 2019) and early dry (February 2020) seasons. Forty-five farmers were selected randomly in the study sites and were each provided with one improved feed trough which was ...

Agroecological heuristics: Xi (Ξ) biomathematical models of alpha diversity and Lambda functional entropy index (λ) applied for macrofauna in diversified agroecosystems of Nicaragua
(2021-12-08)
Agriculture causes chaos on the macrofauna associated with agroecosystems. The functions developed by macrofauna species in agroecological environments are harmful, beneficial and fundamental for food production. In order to design Xi (Ξ) biomathematical models of alpha diversity and to create a functional entropy index (λ), the taxonomic identification of macrofauna was carried out in 10 agroecosystems with conventional and agroecological production approach in five locations of Nicaragua: Boaco, Carazo, Chinandega, ...

Effects of agroecological practices on soil organic carbon sequestration using synchronic and diachronic approaches in Madagascar
(2020-06-16)
Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in agricultural systems is a key indicator of soil fertility improvement and climate change mitigation at the global scale. In Madagascar, the effect on SOC sequestration of converting from traditional practices to agroecological ones remains unclear. The objectives of this study were (i) to assess the impact of agroecological practices, such as agroforestry (AF), tree plantation (TP) and improved farming practices (IFPs), on SOC sequestration at the field level; and (ii) to ...

Forage diversity and fertiliser adoption in Napier grass production among smallholder dairy farmers in Kenya
(2021-11-10)
Feed scarcity is one of the major challenges affecting smallholder dairy production in Kenya. Forages are the foundation of livestock nutritional requirements; forage diversification and fertiliser are intensification options that can increase productivity. A sample of 316 and 313 smallholder farmers were surveyed in eastern midlands and central highlands of Kenya, respectively, to establish the types of forages cultivated and the factors that influence fertiliser adoption in Napier grass (Cenchrus purpureus Schumach.) ...

Role of Pseudouridine Formation by Deg1 for Functionality of Two Glutamine Isoacceptor tRNAs
(2017-01-26)
Loss of Deg1/Pus3 and concomitant elimination of pseudouridine in tRNA at positions 38 and 39 (ψ38/39) was shown to specifically impair the function of tRNAGlnUUG under conditions of temperature-induced down-regulation of wobble uridine thiolation in budding yeast and is linked to intellectual disability in humans. To further characterize the differential importance of the frequent ψ38/39 modification for tRNAs in yeast, we analyzed the in vivo function of non-sense suppressor tRNAs SUP4 and sup70-65 in the absence ...

Untergangsphantasien/-diskurse: Goll, Céline, Gracq, Houellebecq
(2016)

Reading a short story changes children’s sustainable behavior in a resource dilemma
(2019-12-02)
Fostering sustainable behavior in children and adolescents should be a central aim of today’s education. Even though the interplay of factors affecting sustainable behavior is complex, simple interventions can be effective too. In the current study, 10-year-olds (N = 132) were read a short story about two foresters who collectively used a forest to gain timber, facing a resource dilemma that involved striving for maximizing their individual profit while sustaining the forest. In the story, the foresters solved the ...
