Microbial use of organic substrates and maize growth, especially in saline and alkaline soils of Pakistani Punjab
(2005-04-18)
This thesis consists of 4 main parts: (1) impact of growing maize on the decomposition of incorporated fresh alfalfa residues, (2) relationships between soil biological and other soil properties in saline and alkaline arable soils from the Pakistani Punjab, (3) decomposition of compost and plant residues in Pakistani soils along a gradient in salinity, and (4) interactions of compost and triple superphosphate on the growth of maize in a saline Pakistani soil. These 4 chapters are framed by a General Introduction and ...

Hyperspectral field measurements to determine dry matter yield and nutritive value of legume-grass swards
(2009-04-29)
Summary:
Productivity, botanical composition and forage quality of legume-grass swards are important factors for successful arable farming in both organic and conventional farming systems. As these attributes can vary considerably within a field, a non-destructive method of detection while doing other tasks would facilitate a more targeted management of crops, forage and nutrients in the soil-plant-animal system.
This study was undertaken to explore the potential of field spectral measurements for a non destructive ...

Evolving Classifiers - Evolutionary Algorithms in Data Mining
(2007-09-28)
Data mining means to summarize information from large amounts of raw data. It is one of the key technologies in many areas of economy, science, administration and the internet. In this report we introduce an approach for utilizing evolutionary algorithms to breed fuzzy classifier systems. This approach was exercised as part of a structured procedure by the students Achler, Göb and Voigtmann
as contribution to the 2006 Data-Mining-Cup contest, yielding encouragingly positive results.

Approximate approximations for the Poisson and the Stokes equations
(2006)
The method of approximate approximations is based on generating functions representing an approximate partition of the unity, only. In the present paper this method is used for the numerical solution of the Poisson equation and the Stokes system in R^n (n = 2, 3). The corresponding approximate volume potentials will be computed explicitly in these cases, containing a one-dimensional integral, only. Numerical simulations show the efficiency of the method and confirm the expected convergence of essentially second order, ...

Approximate Approximations and a Boundary Point Method for the Linearized Stokes System
(2007)
The method of approximate approximations, introduced by Maz'ya [1], can also be used for the numerical solution of boundary integral equations. In this case, the matrix
of the resulting algebraic system to compute an approximate source density depends only on the position of a finite number of boundary points and on the direction of the normal vector in these points (Boundary Point Method). We investigate this approach for the Stokes problem in the whole space and for the Stokes boundary value problem in a bounded ...
