A free boundary approach to the Rosensweig instability of ferrofluids

We establish the existence of saddle points for a free boundary problem describing the two-dimensional free surface of a ferrofluid which undergoes normal field instability (also known as Rosensweig instability). The starting point consists in the ferro-hydrostatic equations for the magnetic potentials in the ferrofluid and air, and the function describing their interface. On the existence of symmetric minimizers

In this note we revisit a less known symmetrization method for functions with respect to a topological group, which we call G-averaging. We note that, although quite non-technical in nature, this method yields G-invariant minimizers of functionals satisfying some relaxed convexity properties. We give an abstract theorem and show how it can be applied to the p-Laplace and polyharmonic Poisson problem in order to construct symmetric solutions. Optical amplification and stability of spiroquaterphenyl compounds and blends

In this contribution, we present a systematic investigation on a series of piroquaterphenyl compounds optimised for solid state lasing in the near ultraviolet (UV). Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) thresholds in the order of 1 μJ/cm2 are obtained in neat (undiluted) films and blends, with emission peaks at 390 1 nm for unsubstituted and meta-substituted quaterphenyls and 400 4 nm for para-ether substituted quaterphenyls. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie sich in einer Familie von abelschen t-Moduln die Teilfamilie der uniformisierbaren t-Moduln beschreiben lässt. Abelsche t-Moduln sind höherdimensionale Verallgemeinerungen von Drinfeld-Moduln über algebraischen Funktionenkörpern. Bekanntermaßen lassen sich Drinfeld-Moduln in allgemeiner Charakteristik durch analytische Tori parametrisieren. Diese Tatsache überträgt sich allerdings nur auf manche t-Moduln, die man als uniformisierbar bezeichnet.

Optimal control theory for a unitary operation under dissipative evolution

We show that optimizing a quantum gate for an open quantum system requires the time evolution of only three states irrespective of the dimension of Hilbert space. This represents a significant reduction in computational resources compared to the complete basis of Liouville space that is commonly believed necessary for this task.
