Climate-smart agriculture policy and (in)justice for smallholders in developing countries
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2019-06-05)
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations developed the term Climate-Smart Agriculture as an approach to transform agricultural systems to support development and ensure food security in a changing climate. This paper analyses whether climate-smart agriculture policy meets the demands of climate justice and respects the rights of smallholders; and if not, how it could be amended. The study is based on a literature review supplemented by four interviews with climate-smart agriculture actors from ...

Ultrasound treatment (low frequency) effects on probiotic bacteria growth in fermented milk
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2019-09-04)
The effect of ultrasonic treatment at 40 kHz for 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes on the growth of five different strains of probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5, Lactobacillus casei LC, Lactobacillus reuteri LR-MM53, Bifidobacterium bifidum Bb-12 and Bifidobacterium loungm BB-536) in fermented milk was investigated. The study findings indicate that ultrasound treatment (10 minutes) increased the viable cells and total acidity for LA-5, LC and LR-MM53 samples but decreased viable cells and total acidity in ...

Structural modelling of rice fields-buffalo livestock based integrated agricultural systems in the context of regional development in Humbang Hasundutan, Indonesia
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2019-11-30)
This study analyses the influence of external and internal agriculture conditions on rice fields-buffalo livestock-based integrated agricultural systems in the context of regional development in the Humbang Hasundutan District. The method of analyzing data in research is structural equation modeling (SEM) with IBM SPSS® Amos 22 device. The results indicate that both external and internal agricultural conditions have a significant, positive influence on both rice field-buffalo livestock integrated agricultural systems ...

Food suggestions, meal frequency and dietary diversity among pregnant women: a quantitative study
(2020-10-18)
During pregnancy, nutritional requirement increases. Therefore, many nutritious foods (diverse food groups) are suggested for pregnant. This study aimed to explore the association between food suggestion and meal frequency with dietary diversity among pregnant women. This research was a cross sectional study conducted in 2017 at Sumenep Regency in the Eastern Madura Island, East Java Province, Indonesia. There were 282 pregnant women involved in this study. Coefficient contingency were done to analyze the association ...

Carbon footprint for wheat and corn under Egyptian condition
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2018-12-26)
Egypt agriculture is facing a great joint challenge of ensuring food security and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions under climate change. Characterizing the carbon footprints of crop production by life cycle analysis is be critical for identifying the key measures to mitigate greenhouse gas emission while sustaining crop productivity in the near future. Agriculture contributes a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions and concurrently represents a carbon dioxide (CO2) sink; it thus has two fold opposing impacts ...

Engaging stakeholders in traditional food products through dissemination of knowledge and innovation based in digital platforms
(2020-11-29)
The agrofood sector has a great sectorial and business dispersion, constituting, in parallel, a relevant space of the European and national economy. In addition to the economic and social impact, the growth of the sector is also an opportunity for the development of rural areas and agriculture, particularly in view of Europe's shortages in food raw materials. The need for continuous improvement, and market developments of this sector, require that innovation processes occur. This process has been facilitated by the ...
