Post-harvest handling practices and associated food losses in sweetpotato and cassava value chains of southern Ethiopia
(2018-02-12)

Theoretical study of magnetism, structure and chemical order in transition-metal alloy clusters
(2012-02-27)
Research on transition-metal nanoalloy clusters composed of a few atoms is fascinating by their unusual properties due to the interplay among the structure, chemical order and magnetism. Such nanoalloy clusters, can be used to construct nanometer devices for technological applications by manipulating their remarkable magnetic, chemical and optical properties. Determining the nanoscopic features exhibited by the magnetic alloy clusters signifies the need for a systematic global and local exploration of their ...

Development and applications of density matrix functional theory of generalized Hubbard Models
(2012-01-25)

Relativistic LCAO with Minimax Principle and New Balanced Basis Sets
(2011-01-13)
Relativistic density functional theory is widely applied in molecular calculations with heavy atoms, where relativistic and correlation effects are on the same footing. Variational stability of the Dirac Hamiltonian is a very important field of research from the beginning of relativistic molecular calculations on, among efforts for accuracy, efficiency, and density functional formulation, etc. Approximations of one- or two-component methods and searching for suitable basis sets are two major means for good projection ...

Experimental and modeling studies of forced convection storage and drying systems for sweet potatoes
(2016-12-13)
Sweet potato is an important strategic agricultural crop grown in many countries around the world. The roots and aerial vine components of the crop are used for both human consumption and, to some extent as a cheap source of animal feed. In spite of its economic value and growing contribution to health and nutrition, harvested sweet potato roots and aerial vine components has limited shelf-life and is easily susceptible to post-harvest losses. Although post-harvest losses of both sweet potato roots and aerial vine ...

An integrated assessment of resource use strategies in the Borana pastoral system of southern Ethiopia
(2015-08-18)
In the pastoral production systems, mobility remains the main technique used to meet livestock’s fodder requirements. Currently, with growing challenges on the pastoral production systems, there is urgent need for an in-depth understanding of how pastoralists continue to manage their grazing resources and how they determine their mobility strategies. This study examined the Borana pastoralists’ regulation of access to grazing resources, mobility practices and cattle reproductive performances in three pastoral zones ...

First-principles electronic theory of non-collinear magnetic order in transition-metal nanowires
(2015-05-27)
The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of one-dimensional 3d transition-metal (TM)
monoatomic chains having linear, zigzag and ladder geometries are investigated in the frame-work of
first-principles density-functional theory. The stability of long-range magnetic order along the
nanowires is determined by computing the corresponding frozen-magnon dispersion relations as a
function of the 'spin-wave' vector q.
First, we show that the ground-state magnetic orders of V, Mn and Fe linear chains at ...

Magnetic interactions between transition metal impurities and clusters mediated by low-dimensional metallic hosts: A first principles theoretical investigation
(2015-03-31)
The magnetic properties and interactions between transition metal (TM) impurities and clusters in low-dimensional metallic hosts are studied using a first principles theoretical method. In the first part of this work, the effect of magnetic order in 3d-5d systems is addressed from the perspective of its influence on the enhancement of the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE). In the second part, the possibility of using external electric fields (EFs) to control the magnetic properties and interactions between nanoparticles ...

Optimization of Processing Technology for Commercial Drying of Bananas (Matooke)
(2014-05-08)
Summary -
Cooking banana is one of the most important crops in Uganda; it is a staple food and source of household income in rural areas. The most common cooking banana is locally called matooke, a Musa sp triploid acuminate genome group (AAA-EAHB). It is perishable and traded in fresh form leading to very high postharvest losses (22-45%). This is attributed to: non-uniform level of harvest maturity, poor handling, bulk transportation and lack of value addition/processing technologies, which are currently the main ...
