Effect of different types of soil conditioners (plant-derived composts and animal manure) and application methods on quantitative and qualitative characteristics of tomatoes and selected soil parameters
(2018)
World population prospect has increased the need for food production, therefore ensuring the sustainable production of food has been of interest to researchers of agricultural sciences, as well as politicians, due to high demands by consumers in various countries in the world.
In this dissertation, we have investigated the effect of different types of composts, from residual biomass (household compost (HC), Spent mushroom compost (SMC) and Vermicompost (VC)), on different characteristics of plant and soil in organic ...

Effects of agroecological practices on soil organic carbon sequestration using synchronic and diachronic approaches in Madagascar
(2020-06-16)
Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in agricultural systems is a key indicator of soil fertility improvement and climate change mitigation at the global scale. In Madagascar, the effect on SOC sequestration of converting from traditional practices to agroecological ones remains unclear. The objectives of this study were (i) to assess the impact of agroecological practices, such as agroforestry (AF), tree plantation (TP) and improved farming practices (IFPs), on SOC sequestration at the field level; and (ii) to ...

Volatile Compounds effects in Industrial Food Recipes using Food Pairing Method
(2020-12)
The present study aims to investigate the flavour pairing-methodology for product development in an international acting company. Besides the sensory tests, analytical investigations and algorithmic works are part of the research.
In this study, original food ingredients (eighty-seven flavouring ingredients) which are mostly consumed in Turkey and some of them are currently used in a worldwide acting company (Headquarter in Germany with a branch in Turkey) were examined to postulate which ingredients should be brought ...

Adoption and utilisation of Zai pits for improved farm productivity in drier upper Eastern Kenya
(2020-03-06)
Inadequate and poorly distributed rainfall and declining soil fertility have led to low crop productivity in most smallholder farms in sub-Saharan Africa. As a result, there has been a renewed quest for sustainable and resource-use efficient agricultural production practices. Zai pit technology is a practice that has the potential to alleviate water stress and enhance soil fertility. We assessed the factors that influence farmers' adoption and utilisation of Zai pits in Tharaka-Nithi County in upper Eastern Kenya. ...

How do management practices and farm structure impact productive performances of dairy cattle in the province of Pichincha, Ecuador
(2020-11-11)
The combination of "ancestral knowledge" and modern agricultural techniques are increasingly used by Andes farmers, demonstrating its great importance as an ideal alternative to achieve international standards of productivity and sustainability. Pasture management has demonstrated its relevance in terms of milk volume and quality in farms located in the Ecuadorian highlands, showing a wide range of types of forage resource use, in its constant search for better animal yields from the occupancy rate. However, while ...

An approach to the use of technology in the cocoa-growing sector: a look from the producer
(Section Specialized Partnerships in Sustainable Food Systems and Food Sovereignty at the University of Kassel, Germany and Federation of German Scientists (VDW), 2020-03-06)
A study was conducted to keep scientific record of the challenges and opportunities of the insertion of a mobile app for cocoa producers in the Colombia region as a prospective tool or strategy for technological transfer and appropriation into that sector. A survey with structured and semi-structured questions that pertained to cocoa producer men and women was conducted. The questions were related to the general conditions of their labour activities and were discriminant in the following categories: cocoa-grower ...

Boxwood Borer Heterobostrychus brunneus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) Infesting Dried Cassava: A Current Record from Southern Ethiopia
(2017-01-27)
Insect specimens of adult beetles and larvae of 7–9 and 9–10 mm length, respectively were collected from infested dry cassava at two locations from multiple stores in southern Ethiopia. The specimens were identified as Heterobostrychus brunneus (Murray, 1867) commonly known as boxwood borer and auger beetle. The study presents a current record of H. brunneus in Ethiopia, particularly in the context of infesting food products. Additionally, a wide geographical distribution of the pest was reviewed and presented in ...

Effects of climate change on fungal community structure and organic matter turnover in soil profiles along elevation gradients in alpine ecosystems
(2019-10)
Although elevation patterns of diversity for plants and animals are well known, understanding of variations in fungal community structure along elevation gradients is limited. Soil fungi play an important role in soil microbial communities, where they improve soil organic matter (SOM) turnover and nutrient circulation. Hence, any change in fungal community structure will have strong effects on soil and ecosystem functioning. The main purpose of this thesis is therefore to investigate how climate induced shifts in ...

Variation in baobab (Adansonia digitata L.) root tuber development and leaf number among different growth conditions for five provenances in Malawi
(2020-08-21)
The baobab tree is an underutilised indigenous fruit tree in sub-Saharan Africa which, at the same time is vulnerable to overexploitation in areas close to centres of demand, as currently baobab use is limited to wild, baobab trees. Baobab seedlings are known to form root tubers, but little is known about their growth characteristics and its yield potential. This study aims to investigate the root tuber and leaf development of baobab seedlings grown from seeds of five provenances, sown at three different planting ...
